Procedure
Procedure
The declaration is done by the mother, the father/mother or both together. The father or co-mother can only declare the child:
- if he or she is married to the mother
- if he or she acknowledged the child before birth. If the father or co-mother has not yet acknowledged the child, this can still be done during the declaration. In that case, the mother and the father or co-mother must be present together.
After the day of delivery, you have 15 calendar days to declare the birth. If the fifteenth day after the birth is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday you still have time until the next working day.
You register your child at the registry office of the municipality where the child was born. In some municipalities it is also possible to register the birth of your child at the maternity hospital.
At the time of the declaration, you will receive a number of birth certificates. Do not lose these documents as you can use them to:
- apply for the Growth Package
- register your child as a dependant with your health insurance fund.
In the case of a stillborn child, the declaration requirement also applies from 180 days of pregnancy.
