A European driving licence is a bank card-sized document with a photograph, which allows you, as a driver of a motorised vehicle, to prove that you have sufficient knowledge, insight and skill to be able and authorised to drive a motorised vehicle of a certain category. Anyone driving a motor vehicle on public roads must hold a driving licence valid for the category to which the vehicle belongs.
The European driving licence is valid for 10 years. It is valid in:
- all European Economic Area (EEA) countries: these are the countries of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway
- the countries outside the EEA that recognise the Belgian driving licence.
