On the corner of Kapelstraat and Klemskerkestraat, you’ll spot a picturesque little chapel amid the greenery: Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Ter Duinen. The families of fishermen and women visit this pilgrimage site to pray for their loved ones. The chapel dates back to 1736.
The chapel is brimming with photos of missing and deceased fishermen and women, images of saints and flowers. This colourful sight offers a glimpse into the soul of our seafaring people.
A grotto can be found next to the chapel, in which candles are burnt in honour of Our Lady all year round. The altar next to the grotto serves as a setting for outdoor mass. Mass can be attended here every Saturday in July and August, and a pilgrimage visits the site every third Thursday in May. This is traditionally followed by a Eucharist at 16:00.
